The Schulze Organ Story

Coda: Chapter 14

And Now ............…

List of Organists

So, how is it doing?   It was not all plain sailing.  In the Autumn of 2004, the Oboe rank on the Swell decided to sound at all times, and occasionally, sounds either disappear, or stick!  Harrison & Harrison were on hand to sort these difficulties, known as “teething” problems. Funds are in credit, with plenty of CDs still to sell.  Also on sale, the DVD featuring Graham Barber, playing the 94th Psalm by Reubke, and presenting a glimpse of the Restoration work plus interviews with Gillian Weir and Nicholas Kynaston.

2014 heralded 10 years of the Restoration of the Armley Schulze Organ, and we celebrated this anniversary in style.  The highlight was the showing of the 1939 silent film "Phantom of the Opera", with live organ improvisation by Darius Battiwalla.

The show was advertised as : "A late-night performance in the spooky neo-gothic St. Bartholomew's on the eve of Le Grand Départ promises to be a spine-tingling event." It did not disappoint.

I was very excited when told that Mr. Rob Shorland-Ball was preparing a definitive print-out of Dr. Johnstone’s ‘Armley Schulze Organ’ with much up-dated and additional information. The book he produced is quite amazing. Alas, these days, hard copies have been superseded by websites, and the Schulze committee of St. Bartholomew’s Church decided to take the latter option.

I’ve modelled the site using Mike’s set-up, from 1996. Our son, Tim, was web-master, until I took over in 2003. Very old-fashioned now, (both the site and the mistress), and I apologise sincerely for technical errors.

Many thanks to our subscribers, and all who attend our Concerts – and to those who have supported the utube events put on by both Graham Barber and Chris Newton.

Long may our wonderful instrument flourish, Thelma Collins, January 2022
